Surf the Seasons with Northcore

Each and every year the surf world goes through a similar transition

Summer 3/2mm replaced by thick 5/4/3mm suits, staving off the need for boots, gloves and hoods for as long as our hardy inner steel can survive. There’s no sign of stacking the board until the warmer months, just a rekindled determination to conquer the ocean storms that billow through each winter.

The WildTribe surf crew lined-up an early winter season surf project with Northcore, on a mission to trial the ‘Surfshield’ ear plugs recently launched by the British cold water surf brand. Our crew combined exceptional surf photography talents from around the world to not only test the Surfshields, but also create a photography gallery of their surf trips.

Jakob Gjerluff took to the road and headed-off across British Columbia to the fabled waves of Tofino, a wild rugged coastline blessed with natural beauty. Michal Pelka, a Dutchman with an eye for a heavy slab took his camera into the waters of Hossegor during a week of hammering sets in the Atlantic. Our Southern Hemisphere team of Josh Jenkins and Jake Ward took to the glassy breaks around Dunedin (New Zealand) and Manly (Australia). Whilst Eimear and Nick roamed the west coast of Ireland and Cornwall to seek out Atlantic wedges.

As all surfers and outdoorsman know, the conditions mother nature delivers can be described as unpredictable at the best of times. Surf photographers don’t fight these conditions (we’ll never win), but instead work with them to convey the essence of the environment we find on that given day.

During the past few months each member tested the Northcore Surfshields in a range of conditions. The earplugs were simple and straightforward to use, designed to feel comfortable in the ear and attached to a lightweight rubber cord, which also has a useful clip to attach the Surfshields to your wetsuit behind the neck. In the ocean the Surfshields keep out the cold water and let in the sound allowing you to keep up the stoke with your crew. All in all a good product that will save your ears from water-logging, can be tucked away into a nicely designed pouch and at an affordable price.
